Therapy Approaches

As a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, I have been trained in a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, enabling me to work flexibly and integratively to best meet your individual needs. Alongside psychological factors, I encourage a holistic approach that also considers social and biological influences on wellbeing, including connection, nutrition and exercise.

I routinely adapt therapeutic approaches to suit your individual needs and ways of processing information in a trauma-informed and neuroaffirmative way. I am mindful of the impact of ableism and systemic factors on neurodivergent individuals. My work is also informed by principles of intersectionality and cultural sensitivity.

Eye Movement Desensitisation Therapy (EMDR)

Traumatic events whether in the recent or distant past have a way of showing up repeatedly in the present and getting in the way of life (even if we don’t realise it). Trauma can impact our minds, bodies and relationships. EMDR is a highly effective therapy designed to support people while processing trauma and the stuck emotions and sensations associated. EMDR has been shown to liberate and free people from the weight of past creating space to engage fully in the life that they wish to lead. I am trained in both standard protocol and attachment focussed EMDR.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Feeling a bit lost or lacking direction in life? Perhaps there’s a gap between the life you want and the life you have. This is a common feeling for many of us, especially given the fast paced achievement driven society we live in. ACT focuses on life fulfilment and helps to uncover and develop our core values and use these as motivation to make meaningful change in our lives.

Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT)

Do you find yourself beating yourself up time and time again? This is incredibly common among humans. However, if these patterns dominate we are likely to become vulnerable to depression & anxiety. CFT develops a deep understanding of our difficulties and uses tried and tested techniques to help alleviate distress including shame, guilt & self critical patterns whilst exploring alternative way of being using compassion.

Schema Therapy (ST)

ST is an active therapy involving thoughts, feelings, behaviours and body. ST supports you to identify and explore longstanding self-defeating patterns and ways of being. It explores the impact of early unmet emotional needs and how this can impact your way of relating to yourself and others as an adult. It also allows for exploration of coping modes and opportunity to review these alongside strengthening a wise adult perspective. This may involve processing difficult experiences.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Over time and through experience we develop patterns of thinking and patterns of behaviour. Sometimes these patterns are unhelpful and can inadvertently fuel psychological distress. CBT is a skills based therapy whereby you explore and develop tools and strategies to learn helpful patterns of thinking and behaving. This may involve challenging ways of thinking or making changes to what you do to make you feel better.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

The human mind has evolved to time travel. That is, we spend a significant chunk of time and attention based in the future or the past. It may be that you get caught up with future planning, anticipating, worrying or equally you may get stuck in the past where you loop on memories, ruminate or dwell. These habits of mind can hijack us from being in the present moment, right now. As a consequence, we miss out on a lot. Mindfulness provides training over time to develop a “mindful muscle” in our mind which can hook us back into the present moment, and thus create a richer experience. I have experiencing of delivering MBCT groups.
